Welcome to Tasmania
the holiday island of Australia
Tasmania lies off the South East coast of mainland Australia.
The two areas are divided by the Bass Straight and accessed either by ferry or
by plane. The ferry, called the 'Spirit
of Tasmania' sails from Melbourne in Victoria to Devonport in the north of
Tasmania and regular flights to Hobart and Launceston are available from main
Australian airports.
The island is one of the favourite destinations for
Australians, as it offers a significant difference to the destinations on the
mainland. The island has a cooler climate, and far more diverse eco system
and wildlife habitat. Tasmania also attracts the visitor interested in the
history and culture of early Australian history.
Hobart,
Launceston,
Port Arthur,
Strahan and the scenic
Bruny Island are of
particular interest.
If you are looking for adventure, the island offers a wide range
of activities in its
National Park network, with extensive area of wilderness bush walking and
exploration. Exciting marine eco tourism trips run from Strahan, Hobart,
and Bruny Island. Surfing is a popular activity taking advantage of the
large waves thundering in from the 'Southern Ocean'
Wildlife is one of the main attractions, with Tasmania having
significant numbers of rare birds, plants and animals. Sea eagles,
Wedge Tailed eagles and other birds or prey are fairly common. Penguins,
seals, whales and dolphins inhabit the rich coastal waters along with abundant
fish. Bruny Island in the south has all these features along with white
wallabies and rare species of bird like the
Spotted Pardalote
